Let me premise this DermTV episode with this reminder: On DermTV, I don’t make up the rules, I just report and Teach you the facts!
Having said that, just because the sun doesn't hit your scalp doesn't mean you can't get skin cancer there, especially melanoma.
I know that’s not fair, and in another DermTV episode I’ll explain how and why that actually happens… But the fact remains that most women have the extraordinary opportunity to have a free skin cancer screenings for their scalp, face and even the back of their neck every time they visit their hair care professional, whether it’s for a haircut, coloring, blow out, hair straightening, extensions or anything else.
You see, your hair dresser may not be a dermatologist, but he or she is used to looking at those areas and has a pretty good idea of what belongs and what doesn't, or what just doesn’t look right.
So the next time you’re at your hair dresser, ask specifically if they see any growths or discolorations in your scalp, on the back of your neck, and even on your face that they think “looks funny.” It’s sort of like asking if they see any “ugly ducklings” or something that just “quacks differently.” And if they do find something, show it to your dermatologist. This is the skin cancer detection version of, "If you see something, say something!"
And guys, this isn't just for women. You can ask your barber as well.
Oh, and one more thing. I know just what hair styling, color, high lights, extensions and all these things cost and indeed they’re not free… but this potentially life saving exam is!
