You’ve heard me tell you time and time again that unprotected sun exposure and smoking both cause premature aging of your skin and they just make you look older. But today, I am very excited to tell you about a new medical study that proves it. This medical study was published in The Archives of Dermatology this month, December, 2009, and the beauty and compelling part of this study is that it involves members of twin pairs. When we do studies and we try to figure out, for instance, does sun exposure cause aging of the skin or not, we also have to control for certain variables that would predispose one person to look older versus another person but, when you do pairs of twins, you control for the genetics, so for both members, genetic predisposition is the same. If you also control for other behavioral variables like drinking or food consumption, you’ve then isolated the one part of the behavior that you want to study. So if you take two people who are twins and one of them goes out in the sun with sun protection and the other one without sun protection, and the one who doesn’t use sunscreen looks much older and, statistically, amongst all of the groups of pairs, you show this time and time again, then you’ve finally proven that unprotected sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin or makes you look older. So at the twins’ day reception in Twinsburg, Ohio (you can’t make this kind of stuff up), 65 sets of twins, 130 people, were examined by medical investigators and, through this twin study, they demonstrated that both smoking and unprotected sun exposure both cause premature aging of the skin and make you look older. The proof doesn’t get any better than this.
