Fillers are great treatments for fixing lines and wrinkles and everyday patients come to see me to ask for filler treatments to fix their lines and wrinkles to make their skin smooth again. Some patients ask me, are the fillers I use natural? Let me explain. Natural fillers are made of materials that are normally found in the skin. Collagen, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and fat are all normally found in the skin so those are natural fillers and we know that the natural fillers may not last as long as some other fillers but your much less apt to have adverse reactions or allergic reactions with them. The other group of fillers, the non-natural or foreign fillers, are things that are used, they’re FDA approved but they’re not normally found in the skin, like silicone, plexi-glass, plastic beads and even certain materials from bone called hydroxyapatite. Now most of those may be FDA approved and the incidence of allergic reactions, even with those fillers, are low. But when an allergic reaction occurs with one of those fillers, it lasts much longer and what we’re talking about is disfiguring and lasts many years. And as a matter of personal philosophy, I choose to use fillers that are natural to the skin. If you’re going for a filler treatment make sure you discuss with your Doctor whether the filler is natural or whether it’s not and what the implications and risks of those treatments are.
