After DermTV episodes explaining what moles and freckles are… and the very important differences between them… I received a lot of questions about beauty marks… especially asking what they are and how they’re different from moles and freckles. This is an easy one and probably the shortest DermTV episode ever!
All beauty marks are moles!
Everything I said about moles applies to beauty marks… their colors, shape, whether they are flat or raised, and even their potential to turn into deadly melanomas. Many celebrities have specific beauty marks for which they have become known by. Because the term “beauty marks” has an aesthetic connotation, we generally tend to call moles on the face beauty marks, while the same exact mole elsewhere on the body is just called a mole.
So while every beauty mark is a mole, and every mole could be called a beauty mark, depending on where they are, some are called moles and some are called beauty marks.
